Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) - The legendary dispute between rival divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford fuelled the fire both on- and off-screen in Director Robert Aldrich’s Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Its Grand Guignol story of an aging ex-vaudeville child star (Davis) waging a psychotic reign of terror over her crippled ex-movie star sister (Crawford) became a smash hit and nabbed Davis her 10th Academy Award nomination for her acid portrayal of the title role. Nominated for an impressive five Academy Awards (winning for Best Costume Design), Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is a mirthful masterpiece of the macabre.

Oh yeah! I’ve been waiting quite awhile to partake in this slab of metaphysical weirdness! Needless to say, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” is everything you’ve heard and more. People went back and forth, frothing at the mouth in anticipation of a Freddy Krueger versus Jason Voorhees duel in “Freddy vs. Jason,” but if you want the real deal all you need do is check out Joan Crawford versus Bette Davis. By all accounts sworn enemies in real life, “Baby Jane” finally brought the two powerhouses together for a knock down, drag out fight of epic proportions in a movie that is so utterly insane it really does defy description. Every thing I will write about the film below won’t do it justice. I imagine this movie is a lot like the Taj Mahal or the Grand Canyon–you can look at pictures and say “Wow! That looks incredible,” but a two dimensional photographic image won’t give you the full effect. You’ve got to go there to appreciate such natural wonders, and you’ll have to rent or buy this DVD to appreciate the wonder of Bette Davis on autocamp as a former child star grown up into, well, read on and see.

Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) had it all when she was a child. A hit song insured that big audiences turned out to see her perform on the stage. Unfortunately, little Jane suffered from an ego the approximate size of Wyoming, an ego that resulted in temper tantrums with her parents and her sister Blanche (Joan Crawford). Eventually her raging sense of self torpedoed her career even as her sister’s began to soar when the film industry blossomed. Jane Hudson sank into obscurity, liquor, cigarettes, and a monstrous case of mental illness that greatly accelerated when a tragic accident put Blanche in a wheelchair for life. Now the two sisters live together in a decrepit house reminiscing about the old days. Well, at least Blanche reminisces. Jane Hudson spends her time stalking around the house in pancake makeup and a gossamer gown now tattered and spattered, spewing sarcasm and veiled threats at her sister, the neighbors, and the maid who arrives once a week to see how things are going. Hudson still thinks it’s possible to resurrect her long dead celebrity if only she can figure out a way to rid herself of the onerous burden that is Blanche. Obviously, she finds a way. She begins tormenting her sister by placing disgusting things in her food and making her sound crazy to outsiders. When that fails to work fast enough, she resorts to out and out physical violence.

With Blanche under lock and key in a bedroom upstairs, Jane begins the rigorous training all performers undertake to return to greatness. She hires a down and out musician by the name of Edwin Flagg (Victor Buono) to drop by the house for voice and dance lessons. Now the real insanity starts as Hudson rapidly devolves back into her childhood persona. She prances about the house singing her old musical numbers, giving it her all without realizing how incredibly grotesque the idea of an elderly woman imitating a child is. Flagg thinks Jane is crackers, and he’s right more than he could possibly know, but a paycheck is a paycheck. Until he finds out what is going on in a bedroom upstairs, that is. Faced with the distasteful presence of the local constabulary and the probability of a lot of probing questions about what’s been going on between the two sisters, Hudson packs Blanche in the car for a trip to the beach. I won’t spoil the conclusion of this cult classic for you, but let’s just say a startling revelation at the seashore proves to be the straw that finally pushes poor Jane Hudson over the edge. The denouement is upsetting, the sort of ending that has you putting your hand to your mouth in a “oh my” gesture.

“Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” is a masterpiece of casting, directing, and performing. The idea of putting these two lionesses of the silver screen in the same picture was a stroke of genius on the part of director Robert Aldrich, although many questioned his sanity for making such a decision. Wouldn’t the two actresses tear each other apart on set? Apparently not, but there were a few confrontations–including a thrown back and some real kicks delivered in a certain scene–and sniping that hinted at the turmoil just under the surface. Aldrich moved forward, crafting a film that is both claustrophobic in its set pieces and one that uses the black and white photography to great advantage. The film really succeeds, however, because of Bette Davis. She blows Joan Crawford out of the water in this movie, although to be fair Davis from the start had the meatier role. Her garish appearance and screeching voice deliver the chills to the nth degree, and her progressive decline into total insanity is shocking and absolutely convincing. Davis was nominated for an Academy Award for her disturbing portrayal of Jane Hudson, and rightfully so. She should have won. I’ve seen hundreds if not thousands of horror films, and Davis’s Jane Hudson ranks as one of the most disturbing characters I have witnessed in any of them.

Sadly, the DVD doesn’t give us much in the way of extras aside from cast and crew biographies and a few pages of text describing the production. Then again, it’s unlikely we would hear about the movie from the primary figures involved in its production since they are all long dead. Perhaps a commentary track with a film historian or a similar person could have been put on the disc; I know of other films that do this. Anyway, if you haven’t seen this film you’ve got to run, not walk, to get a copy. It’s that good, it’s that disturbing, and it’s that memorable.

If you haven’t seen Season One, finish reading this upright now and go gape it. You’re in for a valid treat, as 6FU is one of the most well-written TV dramas ever.

If you watched Season Two when it originally aired and are considering purchasing this station, you should know that the DVD extras are not plentiful. Several of the 13 episodes have optional commentaries you can listen to while you’re watching the episode; I score this is a colossal investment of time for a exiguous payoff, but that’s impartial me. Plus, the last disc contains a short documentary “anatomy of a stiff,” which is worth watching once, but not really that compelling. Another factor that might affect your select decision is that the episodes themselves are rich and stand up to repeated viewings, unlike most of the tripe on television. Plus, watching the episodes on DVD - on YOUR schedule - makes for a considerable better experience than waiting a week or more between episodes as they are aired on HBO.

If you’ve seen Season One but not Season Two yet, the best indicator of whether you’ll like Two is how distinguished you liked One. Yes, it’s good, fans disagree over which of the first two seasons was better. But the overwhelming majority that liked One a lot also liked Two a lot.

I believe both of the first two seasons were Noble, but a bit different. Almost every episode of the first season was very gracious or proper. The second season had the same average quality as the first season, but more variability - that is, a few episodes or storylines were a bit weaker than what we typically saw in Season One, but other episodes and storylines were even better than those in Season One. The last two episodes of Season Two harmful among the best television I’ve ever seen.

I will try to status up the events of Season Two without giving anything away. At the kill of Season One, Nate was coming to grips with a newly diagnosed brain condition that could cause seizures, or even a stroke and death. Nate and Brenda had declared their care for for each other, despite a fairly complicated and sometimes rocky relationship. David was single and struggling in his admire life, and coming to terms with being “out.” He and Keith were peaceful friends, and it was certain that they mild had feelings for each other. These storylines are developed further in Season Two, with many inspiring twists and turns along the intention. Of course, there are also storylines intelligent Ruth and Claire. Ruth’s growth in Season Two is nonlinear - she seems to get progress in one episode, but then reverts aid to her sad, repressed, controlling self in the next. Claire has enchanting relationships with different people, each of which shapes her in some plot, helpful or poor, and she gets a bit of direction in her life toward the slay of Season Two.

One of the things that makes 6FU so gigantic is that it’s so genuine. The characters are 3-dimensional, flawed, and (mostly) likeable. Whenever I peer the expose after not having seen it for a month or more, it’s like getting together again with archaic friends. I also respect the point to for taking seriously the issues of religion and minority sexual orientation (Amazon.com has previously censored me for using the word that begins with “h”) . Half of the main characters are religious, and their views are treated very respectfully. One or two of the main characters are g__ (again trying to avoid the censor) and they are portrayed as steady people, with the same joys and sorrows and problems as straight folks.

Bottom line: If you haven’t seen 6FU season two yet, you are in for a right treat. Be patient through the first two episodes, though, as their slightly lower quality is not representative of the rest of this outstanding season.

This has to be my all time current TV point to. I am counting the days until season 4 arrives on the shelves and it’s been a long, hard wait. This family is the epitome of dysfunction and watching their lives unfold can only gain you grateful for your possess, hopefully more sane life.

I enjoyed the first season on DVD having never seen it on HBO and I don’t reflect I ever got up to do anything else. I devoured all 13 episodes immediately went looking for season 2. I am jumpy season 2 wasn’t powerful different. I had to have it all at once and couldn’t close until it was over. This could be a spot I’ll have to deal with eventually but for now, there’s aloof season 3.

With its very adult subject matter, this is not a indicate for kids. Be prepared to gather addicted

A Knight’s Tale
There’s no rule against rock anthems from the 1970s in the soundtrack for a movie about a medieval jousting champion, but if you’re going to attempt such jarring anachronisms, you’d better establish acceptable ground rules. Writer-director Brian Helgeland does precisely that in A Knight’s Tale and pulls off this trick with such giddy aplomb that you can’t help but play along. (Upon witnessing a crowd of peasants at a jousting match, singing and clapping to the beat of QUn’s “We Will Rock You,” you’re either going to love this movie or dismiss it altogether.) Other vintage rock hits will follow, but Helgeland–the Oscar

Theatrically released in 1991 as Highlander II: The Quickening, this sequl was later reedited and gained a small but loyal following (prompting a spinoff TV series), but at the time of its release critic Roger Ebert called it “the most hilariously incomprehensible movie … almost awesome in its badness.” In other words, you might find some guilty pleasure in this chaotic sequl to 1986’s Highlander, in which Christopher Lambert reprises his role as Connor MacLeod, a member of the alien race known as “Immortals,” banished to Earth from his home planet Zeist some 500 years ago. In the year 1999, Lambert owns a corporation that has created a shield to protect the Earth following the depletion of the ozone layer. But the shield is seized by an evil cartel, and Virginia Madsen plays a scientist who assists MacLeod in his mission to destroy the cartel. Sean Connery also reprises his role from Highlander as the Scottish Immortal named Ramirez (?!), but by the time he starts engaging in dashing swordplay you may wonder if he’s wandered in from another movie altogether. Highlander fans welcomed the laserdisc and DVD release of this “renegade” director’s cut, which attempts to clarify the original version’s confusing plot. The DVD includes THX and AC-3 audio, director and producers’ commentary, a generous photo archive, and an original documentary about the making of the film. –Jeff Shannon

The Anthony Mann-Jimmy Stewart Westerns in the 1950s infused the genre with a psychological intensity and psychopathic edge. The brutal The Naked Spur, their third collaboration, is generally considered their best work together and one of the finest Westerns ever made. Stewart is a hard, angry bounty hunter tracking outlaw Robert Ryan in this lean five-character drama set in a deceptively beautiful mountain wilderness. Stewart finds himself saddled with two unwanted partners, sourdough prospector Millard Mitchell (his sidekick in the earlier Mann Western Winchester ‘73) and dishonorably discharged cavalry officer Ralph Meeker. Ryan’s tomboyish sidekick Janet Leigh becomes increasingly torn between duty to her desperate guardian and her growing attraction to Stewart. The rugged landscape of jutting peaks, narrow passes, and torrential rivers is as gorgeous as it is dangerous: a well-protected plateau becomes a sniper’s perch, an old mine turns from protective cave to dangerous cave-in. Stewart delivers the most ruthless performance of his career as a man haunted by betrayal, unwilling to trust and unable to love. Ryan’s jovial banter and charm masks a cold-blooded savagery (he once remarked that it’s his favorite performance). The tension stretches to the breaking point in this taut battle of wits, which culminates in a standoff next to the white water of a raging river, where Mann brilliantly uses the jagged landscape as a deadly battleground–nature itself becomes an enemy. –Sean Axmaker

No, it’s the cast. A homeowner (Jeff Daniels) shoots an intruder, who turns out to be his business partner. A police officer (Robert Forster) suspects a setup. His wife (Joan Allen), who didn’t know they even had a gun in the house, she gets a job with a reclusive computer billionaire (Gary Sinise). The billionaire’s former assistant (Josh Brolin) has left the company to work in the movies, and he falls for a street waif (Anna Paquin). Daniels’s lawyer (Andre Braugher), who is gay, also falls for the waif, much to the chagrin of his unstable partner (David Schwimmer) as well as the waif’s unstable brother (Giovanni Ribisi). Based on a play by Chicago playwright Keith Reddin (who also wrote the screenplay) and directed by theater director turned first-time movie director James D. Stern, It’s the Rage never transcends its theatrical roots. Instead of a character type, each person in the story represents a different (but equally shallow) facet of rage. It’s all just an elaborate setup to preach about gun control and how our society is increasingly a society of rage. What the world needs, the movie is saying, is a little more self- control and understanding. Obviously, what it also needs is a better use of such a talented cast. –Andy Spletzer
