Bill Murry in Caddy Shack meets Motel Hell! This Robins guy is a great comedy actor!! The reason I did not give it a five star is because the supporting acters are not very good. It’s too bad a major film company did not pick up this gem. The worm eating is old hat: you see this on many TV shows. But seeing the characters turn into half worms, plus Robins, make this film. The commentary by producer Ted V. Mikels is interesting. I hope Ted keeps doing this on his DVD editions. THIS IS A MOVIE YOU WON’T FORFGET!

In my sixth grade English class, one of our year-long assignments was to write in a journal. Not necessarily about our personal lives, what lives a sixth grader had in those days I suppose, but anything we felt like expressing. Poems, short stories, lists of video games we wanted for Christmas…whatever. I chose to go the story route, and concocted the adventures of Worm Man and Panda, a deranged individual with a fanatical obsession to save the worms instead of the children. His companion was a cannibalistic panda bear named Panda. They floated around the country in a hot air balloon causing all kinds of havoc. Well, you can imagine what kind of discussion that poor old English teacher had with my mother after she read the journal for herself.

The point here is, “The Worm Eaters”, is exactly the kind of movie an eleven or twelve year old boy might make. That’s what makes it kinda special in a weird way. The humor is goofy and slapstick. The characters are exaggerated and annoying, as adults in children’s stories often are. Even the theme song has a “nya-nya-nya” feel. And don’t forget the heaping helpings of money shots for you Fear Factorites who love seeing squirmy creatures unpleasantly devoured.

The mayor and town council of some Hotel California town want to steal worm-raising hermit Umgar’s land. The better to build those yuppie condos! However, Umgar discovers that when a human eats one of his magic “tenya” worms, they become a giant worm themselves. Well, more like a man or woman covered in soap and stuffed into a sleeping bag, but who’s counting? Eventually, all the baddies, unwanted tourists and golddigers are wormed, and our hero is free to live in peace. Or is he? I won’t spoil the ending, but it rolls right along with the boyhood fantasy motif.

This is the only film in the TVM Collection not directed by the man himself. Herb Robins (Steckler’s amazing Thrill Killers, The Funhouse) is the guilty party this time, although Mikels produced and distributed the picture and sits in for a mostly descriptive commentary. Like his other tracks, he drops out for long stretches, but does tell some interesting stories and points out where some of the extras (including his own son and one of Tura Satana’s daughters!) came from. The only other bonuses are a Mikels filmography, and six trailers. “10 Violent Woman” looks great! Sort of a sleazy and wonderful mix between “Ocean’s 11″ and “Caged Heat”. Expect a review soon.

The Corpse Grinders and Astro Zombies are better intros to the weird world of Ted V. Mikels. If you like those two, you’ll probably enjoy “The Worm Eaters”. Dig that Shaft rip that plays during the chase scene! Check out the clay wheels on that skateboard! And make absolutely sure there’s no worms in the popcorn…

This 2000 episode of the PBS’s NOVA is narrated by actor Stacy Keach and, as the product description indicates, takes an in-depth look at the hot siege weapon of the Middle Ages, the trebuchet (trey-boo-shay.)

Come to think of it, after just re-reading the product description I think its `travel back to the Middle Ages’ and `experience the chaos’ is a little misleading. Basically the Middle Ages are set in the background, source material for the meat of the program. MEDIEVAL SIEGE is a low-tech version of a dear departed cable television show called `Junkyard Wars.’ Here, two teams - one American, the other French - using ancient illustrations and descriptions, try to build a working, castle-busting trebuchet.

The teams aren’t playing around, either. There are medieval weapons specialists (everything has a specialist, doesn’t it?), a forty-plus man team of traditional artisans, a pipe puffing scientist and a pair of forty-foot tall Douglas firs used to build the main arm of the weapon. A trebuchet, by the way, is a large (in this case VERY large) `see-saw’ with a heavy weight on one end. Stick a pea in the bowl of a spoon, pull the spoon back and let it fly and you’ve got the trebuchet concept down.

Buy,Download, Or Stream NOVA: Medieval Siege! Click Here

MEDIEVAL SIEGE was fascinating. Until time starts running down and the workers pull out the socket wrenches and acetylene torches the techniques used are all traditional - ever see someone try to shave down a five-ton tree using 13th century tools? The scale is daunting - one trebuchet requires ten tons of lead counter-weight rings, the other uses a swinging basket that holds fourteen tons. The target is a newly constructed castle wall. The drama is inherent in the situation. Can they figure out how to build a trebuchet without any surviving model to work from? Will the meager historical references to trebuchets provide enough information to build a working model? Will they be able to loft a 250-pound sandstone ball three-hundred yards, much less hit a relatively small target? This program answers all those questions and more in a fun filled sixty minutes.

My boys enjoy this movie and cheer with the craftsmen as they launch their trebuchets. Excellent for teaching material on life in medieval times. Watch this and then view Peter Jackson’s depiction of the attack on Minas Tirith in LOTR with new appreciation, since he shows the orcs with catapults and the city with trebuchets. Then buy “The art of the Catapult” and make your own (providing you have a large backyard and a helmit, of couse) We made our model with popcycle sticks.

Well know where to begin? Madlax is a rather unquic story about an orpahned millenare heiress named Margret Burton whom lives in a peaceful country that resemples France or Itally and a young amazingly skilled female mercinary named Madlax that lives in a war torn central American country. How are these two contected? Why are they even in the same story those are but a few of the questions the series posses.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Madlax: The Complete Collection! Click Here

Let me start off with the good. The formost of the good colemn has to most definately be the animation and artwork. Both are top natched, both still shoots and movement are portrayed smoothly and edge on being called pretty. The voice acting is also quite good as everyone suits their parts and do an admirable job at their parts. The characters developement that does happen in the series is quiet good and interesting to a degree. Lastly in this collem is the music. Like Noir, this ones sister series of sorts the music is some of the best around.

Alright did anybody notice that the plus collem was rather small this time? Well you’re about to find out why. The first and most jaring flaw I have to pick at is the series almost instiance on sad endings. Every character meets with a less then happy ending. As a person who loves happy endings, or sad endings when they fit, this anoys me to no end. Next I have to say is that the series tries to hard to pres the mystery and suspense factor to the point where you just don’t care. Next is the Character Developement, which is greatly neglected in this series. Many of the characters I would have loved to know more about but sadly am never allowed. This series focuses almost exclusively on its plot. Which wouldn’t be a bad things if by the time the plot actually started to reveal itself make become interesting I was bordering on not caring anymore. In short the pacing of the series is just to slow. Not enough is going on to keep you interested. Lastly the few action scenes that there was in the series were badly chorographed, came across as overly thought out and some just bizare. Considering this is an action series as well as a mystery series I was expecting to be impressed by more then one fight in the entire thing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Madlax: The Complete Collection! Click Here

In the end Madlax plays out like Noir’s red head little brother that no one cares about. My advice is if you don’t have Noir or have not seen it do so, its a much better series. If you have seen Noir but still want better then average girl’s wth guns that just happen have a brain stuff, well those are in short supply and next to Noir this is the best. Still I cannot bring myself to suggest everyone to buy this series. Again I have trouple supporting buying this one, there are such better series out there for this genre. If you want girl’s with guns with brains get Noir. If you want girls with guns cool action, get Burst Angle. And if you want girls with guns that make you feel get Gun Slinger Girl. If have all those and can snag this for less the 30$ get it, if not, well you can forget this even exists and you won’t miss much.

This anime is very serious and explains a very complicated story. If you do not have the energy or time to make through the 1st disc then do not get it. If you do, you will really enjoy this story. The artwork is wonderful and the characters are well developed with a cool twist at the end. This is a great box set for any anime collector!

For this 1948 film Ronald Colman, one of the finest actors ever to grace the silver screen, finally got the recognition he long deserved in the form of his first Oscar. In this absorbing, psychological thriller, Colman gave the performance that won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Playing the role of revered stage actor, Anthony John, Colman gives an intense and riveting performance. When the obsessive Anthony John is called to play the role of Othello, he agrees to do so, and his ex wife and love of his life, Brita Kaurin (Signe Hasse) agrees to play the role of Desdemona. All goes well, and the play is a smashing, long running Broadway success.

Playing the role of Othello for such a protracted period of time, however, begins to wreak havoc with John’s sanity, as reality and fantasy collide. Brita is seeing someone else in real life, and John, still in love with her, begins to confuse reality with his role. This spills over into his acting, and his acting spills over into his real life. This double life leads to catastrophic consequences from which there is no turning back. Those cognoscenti viewers familiar with the role of Othello can well imagine where this may lead, given the personal dynamics outlined.

All in all, terrific performances are given by the entire cast. Ronald Colman is magnificent in the part of the conflicted Anthony John, and Signe Hasso does herself proud in the role of John’s ex-wife. Look for a young and buxom Shelley Winters in a small, but pivotal, role. The incisive screenplay, written by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, makes for a drama that is redolent of the New York theatre. Well directed by George Cukor, this is a film that fans of the velvet voiced Ronald Colman will love, as will all those who enjoy a well acted drama.

I first saw Ronald Colman in the 1937 film “Lost Horizon” and I was immediately impressed with his acting ability, primarily his use of subtlety and gesture. His type of acting is extremely rare by todays standards, where the stories are more likely to contain rapid, complex camera shots and special effects to propel the plot. But back in the Silver Screen era it was all about a tight script and excellent acting. That is what we have here, with a particularly potent performance given by the star Ronald Colman. His performance garnered the 1947 Oscar for Best Actor, and many said it was a long time coming. The story is about a stage actor content to play comic leads when he is offered the lead role in Shakespear’s “Othello.” He is reluctant to play the part due to a subconcious realization that his roles eventually seep into his real life, becoming an actual part of his character. When considering the lead in “Othello” this cannot be a good thing. Tragedy is an eventuality. The highlights in the film, for me, were the scenes from the play on stage. Ronald Colman loses hiself in the character completely both on and off the stage and is ultimately very believable and creepy. There are the occasional conventional plot devices common to the era used to wrap things up neatly, but overall this is a forgotten gem of a film from acclaimed director George Cukor. Once the begining credits unfolded and that director’s name was shown I knew this was going to be at the very least, acceptable; at best, exceptional. This film falls nicely between those two possibilities, with a terrific lead performance from Ronald Colman. Thank you.

Whether or not you are a fan of Rob Zombie’s music or films is irrelevant, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is a pure blast. If you can, imagine Fritz the Cat minus the political commentary and double the nudity and violence, as Zombie adapts his own comic to tell the story of professional wrestling super celebrity Beasto (voiced by Tom Papa) who is on a never ending adventure of action and babes. He and his hot, Nazi-zombie hunting sister Suzi X (voiced by Sheri Moon Zombie) embark on a quest to rescue foul-mouthed stripper Velvet Von Black (voiced by Rosario Dawson) from marrying wanna-be world conquerer Dr. Satan (voiced by Paul Giamatti). In the middle of all this are plenty of “I can’t believe what I just saw” moments, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them visual gags, hilarious songs and music, and plenty of animated graphic ultraviolence; so much so that you can’t help but enjoy what you find here. Yes, as you can probably tell by now, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto isn’t for everyone, but if any of the aforementioned sounds appealing in the least, you are almost guaranteed to love this animated flick, regardless whether or not you’re a Rob Zombie fan. Also featuring voice work from Zombie regulars Brian Posehn, Ken Foree, Geoffrey Lewis, and cameos from Sid Haig and Bill Moseley in their House of 1000 Corpses/Devil’s Rejects roles.

After a great many years in conception and production, horror director/artist/metal legend/all-around bad mofo Rob Zombie hath finally bequeathed unto us his animated masterwork “The Haunted World of El Superbeasto”. Was it worth the wait? Well, it’s a mixed bag to say the least, but if I told you I didn’t have a great time I’d be lying to you. What we have here is a twisted tale of stupidity that bombards you with cartoon breasts and behinds, potty humor, racial caricatures, homages and cameos from every corner of the entertainment universe, a truly bizarre comedic soundtrack that sounds like a collaboration between Tenacious D and Flight of the Conchords, and general Rob Zombie madness like you’ve never ever EVER seen before. Sound good? Hop onboard.

What’s the story? Who cares? It’s dumb. This film is about chaotic, childish glee. It begins with a classic black-and-white Universal move by giving us a friendly warning that what we are about to see may horrify us. He’s not wrong, but the movie is far from scary in the traditional sense. It takes on an animation style similar to Ren & Stimpy and utilizes devices and sound effects from all of the innocent classic cartoons we grew up watching. Then all the girls take off their clothes and use prehensile female anatomy in ways that make you embarrassed to be watching then you see your favorite horror characters and get all happy and then all the tailkicking starts and there’s Nazi werewolves (Zombie really likes Nazis..and werewolves…and especially Nazi werewolves) and zombies and Nazi zombies and they have their own theme song and then there’s more boobs and this transforming robot that’s all horny for this awesome chick who steal Hitler’s pickled head and Superbeasto is a luchador who shoves a cat down his pants so he has a bulge and there is Dr Satan who is really a nerd and has a talking gorilla with a screw in his head then all this stuff happens and it’s crazy as fu…….[deep breath]…..Yeah, so this flick gets a bit crazy at times.

So I think we’ve established that the humor in this one is decidedly lowbrow. Let’s talk homages, references, and cameos. It’s pretty much the biggest draw here unless you are one to pleasure yourself to cartoons (which is okay, as a song in the movie informs us, because Japanese people do it every day….nice). Plenty of horror icons ranging from Dr Phibes to the Bride of Frankenstein and The Fly as well as characters from Zombies’ own films, but then there’s references to everything from Benny Hill and Jerry Lewis to Charlie Chaplin (who Beasto mixes up with Hitler) and movies like Taxi Driver and Planet of the Apes. Other amusing cameos of note include Courtney Love, the Olsen Twins, and a featured role for Michael Myers…..as street pizza. This is an infinitesimal sampling. Honestly, aside from the sheer twisted insanity the massive unending pile of homages and cameos are what is going to keep your interest for the full hour and twenty. This has to be some kind of record. Eat it, Tarantino!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Haunted World of El Superbeasto! Click Here

Voice cast. Awesome. Rosario Dawson lets fly some of the most staggeringly ignorant ebonics you’ve ever heard onscreen. Normally, I’m unimpressed by this cheap style of humor, but in this particular setting it did the trick for me. The Mexican caricatures, however, go down as a fail in spite of the marvelous man-god Danny Trejo lending his voice. Getting a real Mexican to play a caricature just doesn’t sound funny, I guess. Tom Papa is pretty much The Man playing the title character. He has a really classic voice and delivers the lines with the perfect amount of sleaze and glee. Rob’s wife Sheri Moon Zombie was born to be a voice actress. As cute as she is onscreen, when she’s reduced to just a voice to an animated caricature her gigantic personality is just unbelievably charming. Again, big thumbs up for the cast.

Throw in some self-referential humor (including a song that plays during an homage scene stolen from a classic horror film that laments the cliche parody and asks if they got permission to do it) more cartoon boobs and ebonics slang, and even more cameos and references and that pretty much sums it up. The special features are a few minutes of extremely brief deleted scenes (one has Leatherface in it) and a very long set of unfinished alternate scenes. I’d have hoped for at least a commentary or making of after all the delays but whatever, Zombie. “The Haunted World of Superbeasto” is a great time if you’re looking for a cartoon to keep as far away from your children/parents/grandparents/girlfriends as possible. You may not get away with all of your brain cells intact, but you’ll probably leave with a smile. A stupid, stupid smile.

3 1/2 stars rounded up because I have a strong urge to watch this again. Soon.

As a juggalo, I gotta say that as long as the Gathering has been around, this DVD should have tons more footage. But I will say that this DVD is totally…..WACK!!!! I have been to 3 gatherings myself and there is no seminar footage, plus the only juggalos they hype on here talking about it, is this British couple that got married at the Gathering. Don’t get me wrong, I love each and every one of my juggalo family on the real tip, but there has been lots of juggalo interaction than just these 2.

This DVD, also needed more Rydas and Dark Lotus footage too.

Plus, where is the JCW footage, Juggalo Night Court, or any of the contests? I see they got Twiztid, ABK, Awesome Dre and BoonDox on here, but what about Blaze? They got lots of ABK but just a little Blaze. Then to top it off, who they got riding the juggalos’ nuts, but Ice T…????? What….?????? Now, Ice T is a cool mutha facko, no doubt, but he aint underground, so why is he on this DVD? Why not have The Dayton Family, or at least Tech N9ne, I mean Tech has showed us mad love over the years. This DVD to me, seemed rushed and hyped way too much..

This DVD should have been like a multiple set, like 3 or 4 DVDs, at least. I mean I got bootlegged 8 DVD sets, with more footage than this and just as good production quality, for the same price. I hope, I got no haters here, but as much as I love Psychopathic and my Juggalo Family, wait and find this DVD for like $5.00 or something, because it definitely aint worth the price I paid. Overall, it’s just aiight….MMFCL Juggalos!!!!

This DVD is lame. I’ve been to Gatherings and this DVD doesn’t show half of the action. I was very disappointed to say the least.

This is going to be great! With such episodes as ‘Cartman Gets An Anal Probe’ and ‘Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo’, you would be crazy not to get it.

- Pez King

Let me start out by saying that if this first season of South Park weren’t so great, I would have given this set 0 or 1 star.

The 2 main drawbacks to this DVD are: 1) the episode listings by disc that are included on the flaps are not even close to the sequencing that actually exists on the discs, with some episodes appearing out of order and in 2 cases not even on the same disc as noted; and 2) no chapter-within-eipsode system exists, which is made painfully obvious after sitting through the howlingly unfunny “Fireside Chat with Matt (Stone) and Trey (Parker)” that prefaces each show. And although the video is quite good (due to the fact that there is only about 95 minutes of video on each disc) the sound is far less superior, filled with many audio “pops” and syncronization issues that were not resolved by swapping out my set for another.

In short, I would like to say that although it is great to see South Park finally come to the DVD format that allows us to appreciate the animation more, Warner Bros fell far short of even my most meager expectations for what a DVD should be. I am glad I received this as a gift otherwise I might try to track down the Warner’s CEO for my forty bucks back, and until they correct their glaring technological and quality-control issues they will not see another dime from me on future South Park releases.

The Longest Day (1962 film)

In 1959, 15 years after the Allied invasion of Normandy, former war correspondent Cornelius Ryan wrote The Longest Day, his popular and critically-acclaimed account of the D-Day landings. Based on painstaking research and interviews with Allied and German veterans and the French civilians swept up in the events of June 6, 1944, The Longest Day remains among the best books on the topic.

It is not surprising, then, that 20th Century-Fox studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck bought the film rights and asked Ryan, (who, besides having been a reporter, had also written plays) to adapt The Longest Day into a screenplay for a major motion picture. Zanuck, who had served in the Army Signal Corps as a lieutenant colonel and helped document the D-Day landings, had always wanted to make a feature film about the invasion. He also had another pressing reason to make what he thought would be a big hit: 20th Century-Fox, nearly crippled by box office flops and the costly production of Cleopatra, was on the brink of bankruptcy.

In order to attract audiences, Zanuck and his massive production team assembled a cast almost as large as the actual invasion force. 48 major international stars from three countries were signed on to what a World War II trivia book described as “the most expensive black-and-white movie made.” Shot in studios near Paris and on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, The Longest Day required not one but three directors. Andrew Marton shot the American exterior episodes, Bernhard Wicki handled the German exterior episodes, and Ken Annakin directed the British exterior episodes. Overseeing the entire project were Zanuck and Associate Producer Elmo Williams, who would later executive produce the Japanese-American Pearl Harbor classic, Tora! Tora! Tora!

The movie basically follows the book’s structure in its three major acts: The Wait, about the preparations on both sides for the invasion; The Night, about the night airborne assault; and The Day, about the landings on the five invasion beaches. The DVD breaks these three acts into 12 chapters.

While by early 21st Century standards The Longest Day’s combat scenes are rather tame - there are no extremely gory scenes as explicit as those in Saving Private Ryan - they do capture the vastness and complexity of the Normandy landings. Shot in a semi-documentary style (major characters are introduced with identifying “credits” so we know who is who), The Longest Day is as accurate as a 1962-era film studio could depict an actual event. The black-and-white presentation allows insertion of a few snippets of actual documentary footage (mainly of German soldiers marching through Paris and running to their fortifications near the beaches) seamlessly into the film. Of course, some characters (such as Eddie Albert’s Col. Thompson) seem to be composites or even fictitious, and some actors (such as John Wayne and Robert Ryan) look nothing like the officers they are portraying. Wayne plays Lt. Col. Benjamin Vandenvoort, who in 1944 was in his 30s, while Ryan plays Brig. Gen. James “Slim Jim” Gavin, who at 38 was the Army’s youngest general. (The more accurate, but far less popular sequel, A Bridge Too Far, cast Ryan O’Neal as Gavin.)

Accuracy goes out the window in at least one respect, and this one is at the top of most D-Day veterans’ list of gripes. While the movie does mention the awful conditions on the transports and landing craft (”Man, that stink! Diesel oil, backed up toilets, vomit. And there ain’t no place to get sick in!” gripes one soldier to Roddy McDowell), when the Allied soldiers get out of the landing craft, they hit the beaches running and screaming like banshees. In Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1994 D-Day, June 6, 1944, veterans scoff at Zanuck’s fanciful depiction, pointing out that they were too tired and too sick to run across the beach, much less yell like Confederates at Gettysburg.

Nevertheless, The Longest Day remains one of the best war movies ever made. Released in October of 1962 and enjoying a long run at the theaters, it was the box office’s top draw for 1963, earning an Academy Award for special effects and, luckily for Zanuck, saving 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy.

The DVD presents The Longest Day to its original CinemaScope wide screen presentation, improving on the CBS-Fox two-cassette VHS version, which was released on the usual pan-and-scan “full screen” re-edit. Other improvements are a sound remastering by THX and a few tiny bits of additional footage. The single disc, however, has very few extra features; only the theatrical trailers to The Longest Day, Patton, and Tora! Tora! Tora!

Here we have the consummate of all war movies of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in WWII in a 2-disc release.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Longest Day! Click Here

Disk 2 bonus features include - A Day To Remember; Longest Day: A Salute to Courage; Backstory - The Longest Day; D-Day Revisted; Richard Zannuck on The Longest Day and a Still Gallery, all well worth owning this release.

However, in 2000 when FOX released a new digital but non-anamorphic transfer, they wisely placed the German and French subtitles in the lower “black bar” area left vacant due to the letterbox format, making for a very pleasant viewing experience. In this release the subtitles are restored back onto the main body of the film. As the text is white and the film being B&W, this makes for a very fatiguing 3 hours of viewing. Sometimes the text just disappears in the white portions of the film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Longest Day! Click Here

***Mini update! As someone politely pointed out, with newer HI-DEF 16 x 9 widescreen TV’s, the subtitle text would disappear with the non-anamorphic 2000 version. As HDTV has superb color and grayscale resolution, this is probably a moot point. As I and many are still waiting for HDTV prices to come down & the technology to go up, it may be advantageous to own both sets.

Otherwise a great movie portraying a fairly realistic look at that fateful day of June 6, 1944. Filmed appropriately in Black & White with complementing WWII stock footage. This is a film for the whole family as it truly does represent the carnage of war without the blood and gore that can disturb some viewers (like myself).

John (”Conan the Barbarian”) Milius wrote and directed this underrated, but distinguished beach movie that is remarkable more than first meets the discover.

What is most memorable is the terrific second unit astronomical wave cinematography by distinguished Imax and surf photgrapher Greg MacGillivray. But the undercurrent (no pun intended) is a troubling memoir that grew from Milius’ memories about his possess surfer buddy friendships on the day — a large Wednesday — when Watts was going up in flames and the surf was peaking.

Almost a tremendous film that in retrospect was far and away more prescient than given credit at the time. Jan Michael Vincent, Gary Busey and William katt are perfect as the friends seeking meaning and purpose as they recede through ten turbulent years starting in the mid-60s.

This title, like Monte Hellman’s “Two Lane Blacktop” and Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider” is a legendary film with a devoted cult following that looks at a specific time in America through the eyes of lost innocence.

“Broad Wednesday” is finally available in a pristine widescreen DVD transfer with an insightful, witty, and at times almost poetic commentary by writer director Milius.

This movie is regarded as a surf classic and rightly so. Slickly produced, consisting of a series of vignettes over 13 years it gives a non-surfing person a revealing insight into the surf culture. The still-thorny order of the Vietnam War is dealt with and the transition from the swinging sixties into the seventies is handled very well (a technique John Milius perfected in his 1983 classic Peculiar Valor which incidentally pre-dated the noteworthy hyped Rambo First Blood II by nearly two years) . The climax of the film is the surf footage at the kill depicting the legendary day of a lifetime, Titanic Wednesday. The only negative is the opinion that the two stars, Jan Michael Vincent and Gary Busey threw away their lives after this movie due to drug addiction (Busey almost died from an overdose in 1994) . Another negative is that some of the surfing terminology in the book didn’t perform it to the film. In the book, the car is referred to as “The Makeshift” - it isn’t in the film. Collected, if you cast these things out of your mind for 100 minutes you will experience something truly special. You won’t be disappointed.

I assume I know why this film was so poorly received and tanked at the box office. It was TOO “inside”. Worthy of this film is a series of jokes about the standard, venerable, formulaic, bombastic action film genre. But the humor was so tongue-in-cheek so often that it probably didn’t bode well with the average action-junkie film fan. “Last Action Hero” made fun of itself as it unfolded, and one would need a obvious sense of humor to fully bask in it on its intended level. I dare say that most folks who went to this film impartial didn’t “fetch it”. Too unpleasant for them.

The major flaw of the DVD is that the film is presented in the god-awful Pan and Scan format. Pan and Scan presentations of frenetically-shot widescreen films should be outlawed, it’s impartial that simple. You almost bag a headache watching this P&S version. The digital pan is so obtrusive and distracting that it can drive one to enrage! It pulls you out of the film, to say the least. I like (but don’t really worship) this film, and the grievous ticket of the DVD makes the bewitch a no-brainer. But it is too optically dejected to spy in P&S.

Release it in widescreen and all will be okay.

This is one of those movies that a lot of people that haven’t seen it say, “That movie wasn’t really that salubrious, was it? ” but those that have seen it, say, “Why wasn’t this movie more well-liked? ” Maybe it was abominable timing, or as some others suggested, unbiased not correctly billed to the public.

Last Action Hero is hard to record. It’s humorous, it’s witty, with lots of those one-liners that Arnold became so approved with, and I loved the method he constantly poked fun at his fictional character as well as his “steady” self. Some of my well-liked dialogue in the movie is when the kid is trying to convince “character Arnold (aka: Jack Slater) ” that he’s actually unprejudiced a character in a movie. The kid starts asking about phone numbers and how can they possibly all launch with 555- in a city with several million phone numbers, when Jack Slater exasperatedly says, “That’s why we have Spot Codes…” Priceless. The movie is fat of fun stuff like that, and I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is even remotely a Schwarzenegger fan, or who unbiased like campy, yet intellectual, movies. The parody within a parody, and movie within a movie actually worked well in this one.

I view the movie had a lot of sizable character performances, and clever scripting, and I contemplate this movie got a bum rap. It’s really a large movie, I’m cheerful I bought the DVD. The transfer is a miniature sloppy in places on the one I bought, but since it’s a “Special Anniversary Edition”, I have a feeling that had something to do with it. There’s only a fullscreen version on my DVD, no widescreen, and the camera pans are really noticeable in a few places.
