Not your usual children’s video, THE SNOWMAN will transport you to a magical fantasy world with nothing but inviting music and gentle images of this petite boy and his improbable snowy friend. No dialog is needed here, you simply sit help and let yourself relax and relish the experience. First time I showed this film to my classroom of four year olds they were fixated to the shroud and I was amazed at how distinguished emotion the narrative evoked in me. I bought the film for my bear nieces and they discover it over and over, not unbiased at holiday time. It has now become a classic in our fill children’s video library. A must have for the entire family.
The first time I was able to concept this film was with my son’s preschool group. The class was tranquil and all the children sat in apprehension of the pleasing creep of James and the Snowman. Once the film was finished, they begged the teacher to play it again. I have 7 children ranging in age 14 months to 13 years, and they all appreciate it as well. The touching music and aesthetic animation manufacture you feel like you are correct there with them on their drag. It brought tears to my eyes when he wakes in the morning to win his snowman gone, but the gift from his spin to visit Santa is unruffled in his pocket, giving him the sense that it wasn’t a dream after all.This film has something for everyone.Vivid!

The broadcast series Scrapped Princess (2003) gives new meaning to the term “anti-hero.” Pacifica Cassul was born under a baleful star: according to the prophecy she’s the poison that will cause the end of the world on her 16th birthday. As the fatal day approaches, she’s on the lam with her older brother and sister, Shannon and Raqul. They’re charged with protecting her from worshippers of the god Mauser, who believe in the prophecy. Pacifica isn’t the most likable character: she fusses and whines and sticks her siblings with all the work. The filmmakers try to balance her petulance with mawkish scenes of doubt and self-pity. The villains multiply in Ichiro Sakaki’s story until it’s not clear just who’s out to get Pacifica. Despite its shortcomings, Scrapped Princess scored a big hit in Japan and may well prove popular in America. (Rated 13 and older: violence, brief nudity) –Charles Solomon

A film adaptation of Dito Montiel’s memoir of the same name, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is a compelling, thoughtful movie based on Montiel’s childhood growing up in 1980s QUns. A writer and director who understands his limitations, Montiel wisely left the acting to the pros. Shia LaBeouf (Holes) plays him during his adolescence, while Robert Downey Jr. (Good Night, and Good Luck, Wonder Boys) portrays the grown-up Dito. Never mind that there is absolutely no physical resemblance between the two actors; LaBeouf and Downey are so convincing in their roles it doesn’t matter. Switching effortlessly from present day (where Dito is a successful author) to the past (where he is a tough little kid trying to figure out if there is life beyond New York), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints tackles Dito’s complicated relationship with his parents (Chazz Palminteri and Dianne Wiest), as well as the friends he left behind. Eric Roberts is magnificent in a small role as one of Dito’s tough, childhood buddies. His powerful performance makes viewers remember there was a time when Roberts was better known for his acting skills than for being Julia’s big brother. Montiel–a first-time filmmaker–won the Director’s Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival for his autobiographical movie. Raw, gritty, and honest, Saints) makes a strong impact and leaves the viewer curious as to how the rest of Montiel’s life will work out. –Jae-Ha Kim

Christopher Lee, long Hammer Studios’ house villain, takes a rare heroic turn as scholar and occultist Duc de Richleau, the kind of role that Peter Cushing had made his metier. Lee plays Richleau with a dark elegance and intensity–he’s a commanding figure with a trim goatee who discovers that the son of a war buddy has joined a satanic cult lorded over by the quietly malevolent Mocata (Charles Gray, best known as the narrator in The Rocky Horror Picture Show). Director Terence Fisher, working from a literate script by genre scribe Richard Matheson, creates a strikingly handsome period piece (set in 1920s rural England) dripping in dread as Richleau and Mocata battle for the souls of two young lovers on both physical and spiritual planes. The action scenes are well handled and the towering Lee cuts quite a figure leaping through hoards of robed devil worshippers to save a sacrificial victim, but the film peaks in an eerie supernatural battle in which Richleau and his skeptical party confronts Mocata’s demons while protected in a giant pentagram. The effects are coarse and dated by today’s standards, but the gorgeous period detail, vivid color, and unsettling imagery create a sinister ambiance, and Fisher’s mix of psychodrama and swashbuckling action makes for an engrossing thriller, a life-and-death struggle between two masters of the forces of light and darkness. –Sean Axmaker
